Simple steps towards better gut health…

“All disease begins in the gut”.  Hippocrates

More than 2000 years ago, Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine” made this statement. His words of wisdom are especially relevant today.  Modern research continues to affirm gut health is critical to general health. In fact, the gut is being referred to as our ‘second brain’.

I expect you have all heard this saying many times, but do you really know just how an unhappy gut can affect your health?

Below are nine easy steps that will help your gut get on the road to being healthy & happy.  Having a happy, better functioning gut will also help you to feel more energized, more focused & give you brighter skin & healthier nails.

A few simple steps towards better gut health

  1. Take Pre & Probiotics every day

Pre & Probiotics are a real interest to me & I believe there is still so much to learn, we are only just skimming the surface.

Probiotics help to restore the balance of ‘good bacteria’ in the intestines and maintain a healthy gut. They can help combat bloating, gas and discomfort caused by an overgrowth of yeasts or ‘bad’ bacteria. They also produce specific fatty acids that feed the cells lining the gut keeping them healthy and boost our immune function.

Prebiotics should increase the number and/or activity of lactic acid bacteria.  In short, they can improve digestion, including enhancing mineral absorption.

  1. Stay hydrated

This is a no-brainer, no surprises here, but staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your digestion and your overall health.  Having insufficient water throughout the day will slow down your digestion.

  1. Get off the couch & get moving

This one is simple & will not only help our gut.   Just 20-30 mins a day of any form of exercise will assist the gut to keep moving.

  1. Limit processed foods and eat more fibre

Processed and fried foods slow down the digestive process and should be kept to a minimum.  A low fibre, high-sugar, processed diet encourages the wrong type of bacteria and yeast to grow in our gut and damages the delicate ecosystem in your intestines.

  1. Chew your food slower

Digestion starts in the mouth and the chewing process starts to break down your food, mixing it with the enzymes in your saliva.

Stay Hydrated

  1. Limit alcohol

Alcohol can irritate the digestive system & drinking too much promotes inflammation in your body.

  1. Manage stress

This can be a difficult one for many of us, but where possible try to manage your stress levels.   Prolonged stress can really wreak havoc on your body, and impact on your digestive system. The ‘fight or flight’ response results in decreased blood flow to your digestive muscles and reduced secretion of digestive enzymes. Stress can also result in gastrointestinal inflammation, constipation or diarrhea.

  1. Regular sleep

Sleep, I love it, can’t get enough of it.  Most of us need 7-8 hours a night. While you might think you can function perfectly well on less, research suggests otherwise.  If you are sleeping badly you are more likely to pick up processed foods & sugary snacks throughout the day to keep you going.  This then is a knock on effect to an unhappy gut process.

  1. Cleanse

Cleansing the gut will help with bacterial, fungal overloads and parasites whilst promoting improved digestion.

Our gut is a very complex part of the body and the information I’ve given here will hopefully set you on the path to a healthier, happier, more gut friendly lifestyle.

I hope you enjoyed the read.
