Let your Skin Bloom this Spring…

Skincare Spring clean.

Yep, we’ve survived another wet & windy Winter & made it to Spring, YAY!!

The combination of cold, dry air and lack of sun has probably left your skin a little dull and lackluster.  Spring is the perfect time to clean out and refresh your skincare routine.

Make a fresh start

Now’s the time to thoroughly wash all those brushes and sponges (the ones you know you should wash every week, but very rarely do!).

Next, review your daily skincare routine. Is it working for you?

Many of us buy the same products, year after year, without really thinking. But what worked in your 20s isn’t necessarily going to be right for you in your 30s or 40s.

Ask yourself if the products you’re using are leaving you with clean, clear and soft skin? Or is it time to find new products better suited to your needs?

Finding the right skin care can be overwhelming.

Here are my top 4 beauty tips for transitioning your skincare routine for spring.

Deep Exfoliation

As you move from Winter to Spring, a deep exfoliation will help strip away these layers and reveal the new skin underneath.  Reach for your favorite face scrub & feel the layers strip away.  Need something deeper? Chemical peels, dermabrasion, and dermaplaning all remove outer layers of skin. Take advantage of a session with a qualified skincare therapist, they can talk you through the options available.

While we all know we should be wearing SPF year-round, on days when it’s raining, cold and there’s not a hint of sun in the sky we know how tempting it is to skip it.

But as the weather warms up, it’s time to bring the daily sunscreen back to your routine. Apply in the morning before heading out, then again at lunchtime before you take your break.  Make sure you get outside for that breath of fresh air & a little me time.

If you hate the feel of a heavy sunscreen, or just can’t be bothered with too much in the morning, look for a moisturiser that contains SPF. Alternately find a range of makeup which offers foundation, concealer, sun protection and active skin care benefits all-in-one.

hydrate 2

Staying properly hydrated is a great way to refresh your body, as it helps to flush out unwanted toxins. Fewer toxins in the body can encourage clearer glowing skin.  The winter months put our skin under a great amount of stress. Dry air, cold wind, heavy makeup and air pollution strips our skin of essential moisture. To prepare for spring it’s essential you look for products that pump moisture back in.

Look for products containing active ingredients, along with antioxidants to fight the signs of aging.

Little tip: Add a few cucumber slices to your water and sip throughout the day. The combo is refreshing, delicious and full of antioxidants!

Reach for something lighter

The warmer weather means that it’s time to switch to a lighter textured moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. Thicker creams in hot weather tend to cause an overproduction of natural oils, which can lead to clogged pores, blemishes and a shiny complexion & we really don’t want any of those…

Just 4 little steps to Spring skin readiness.  However, if you are unsure of where to start, as finding the right skincare can be a little confusing. Take advantage of a session with a qualified skincare therapist they can help you find the right skincare products and routine to give you the skin you want.

Back to Basics – Dry Body Brushing

Taking you right back to basics here, as the oldies are the goodies & this is one of the best & easiest forms of exfoliation.

Heard it all before, sure you have, but when was the last time you actually used your body brush?

Do you really know what this simple technique can do for your body?

Brush daily and you will see improvements in your skin texture, digestion, and general energy. You are brushing towards the heart where the majority of lymph nodes are, improving the lymphatic drainage to your whole system…… and a sluggish lymph system can be the cause of all sorts of common ailments and complaints. Dry skin brushing is also great when combined with any health program, it gets results, and quick, it’s very stimulating & very cleansing…Listening yet….

Dry brushing helps prevent premature ageing as the blood and oxygen supply to the whole body is stimulated and if you use one, the facial brush makes sure the face gets particular attention.

It’s a simple non-time-consuming part of your beauty regime, so follow the routine below & get brushing people!!

boss brush

Just Five Minutes

Five minutes a day to reduce cellulite, tone your skin, tone your body, develop a youthful glow, have loads more energy…..why wouldn’t you.

Having a Body brushing routine will boost your metabolism, circulation, stimulate lymph (the bodies waste disposal system) & exfoliate away all those dead skin cells, leaving your body smooth & pink.

Simply following this sequence every day will make a huge difference.

It’s simple and best carried out before your bath or shower in the mornings.

Go gently at first, as the brush may feel a little harsh but as your skin tones you can get firmer. Begin with light pressure and brush up the body from feet to head. If you can get your hands on one, use a face brush to work the décolleté, neck and face – this brush should be softer to use on the more delicate areas.

  • Use long strokes on both legs from toes to hips,
  • Brush arms from fingertips to shoulders.
  • Use gentle strokes around the stomach in clockwise circles,
  • Brush along and off the shoulders traveling from neck outwards.
  • Buttocks, circular movements are best or from hips into the centre – don’t twist your back too much.
  • Using the smaller brush, work gently down from the collarbone to the bust.
  • Work up the neck from collarbone to chin.
  • Work in gentle circles around the face – like you apply creams, don’t forget the forehead and behind the ears.
  • After a while, you can adjust your pressure, it should feel firm but fair.
  • Never brush over areas of broken skin or varicose veins – don’t forget the soles of your feet if you are not too ticklish and the back and palms of your hands.

Well done………..feeling beautiful yet?

Dry skin brushing is suitable for everyone unless they have broken skin, eczema or psoriasis.

What Next….

After your shower, why not choose a body oil to moisturise your whole body (my personal favourite is jojoba oil) & just watch as it soaks in your fresh, healthy, smooth skin.

I’ve been following this routine for many years as it was taught to me by Jane Scrivner a very good friend who lucky for me happens to be an amazing skin & body care superstar.

Embracing Gratitude

As the first 3 months of this year have now passed.  I’ve sat down & looked at where I am at this exact moment.  From the beginning of this year, it was my goal to embrace everything that has been offered to me.  Whether it was a friendship, an opportunity or even if something came to me with fear attached, I was going with it!

So looking back I feel I need to Embrace Gratitude as I am feeling pleased & proud of where I am.  It’s been small steps that have kept me going through these few months & the belief that, what’s the worse that can happen if I say yes!  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had moments where I just wanted to curl up in a ball & disappear, but that’s the old me, the new me, faces it head on & says F**k it!

I’m really not prepared to let months of my life pass me by while I struggle with Fear and Anxiety, I value my time with family & friends too much.

Keeping this “go for it” attitude can be exhausting & challenging, but overall its lead me to where I am at this present moment.  Sitting here typing away, eagerly awaiting the next opportunity that will walk through my door, pop into my inbox or DM me.

Thank you to everyone that has come into my life over the last 3 months, I’m grateful to you all for the opportunities you have put my way & for everything we are still working on together.  I’m grateful for all the amazing people I’ve met & had amazing conversations with, grateful for just being in great company & feeling the energy from you all.

So in Embracing Gratitude for the first 3 months of this year, I will be eagerly checking in again in the next 3 months.  Come on world, throw it at me, I’m ready, just be gentle with me haha!!

I know everyone says’s you should only look forward, not back, but for me, I need to see the growth, the good or bad & acknowledge it all.

Will you look back on these first few months?

thank you (2)

Top 5 Beauty Tips

This is a piece I recently wrote for Boss Mode Radio, so thought I would share with you all.  Enjoy the read xx

I know, you’ve heard this so many times, but hey, we will keep saying it loud & clear, as it really is that important!

So, water is a must throughout the day at least 2 litres or 8 glasses, whichever you find easier to swallow (no pun intended).

If you can’t do water on its own have a herbal tea or there are some great natural inner beauty boosts you can add for flavour that are also super healthy.

Adding in fruits and vegetables to your diet that have a high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, orange, grapefruit & strawberries is another way to get the hydration your skin & body needs.

Let’s look at topically applied hydration.

Your skin will benefit from a good quality Hyaluronic Acid.

Hyaluronic acid may not be the newest or most sparkling product ingredient out there, but it’s tried and true and seriously good for your skin.  First off, don’t let the word “acid” fool you. Hyaluronic acid isn’t harsh or skin-stripping at all.  In fact, it’s the exact opposite – a powerful humectant (aka moisture-binding ingredient) that keeps skin plump, hydrated and, yes, young-looking.

HA has been referred to as “the key molecule involved in skin moisture” HA is capable of holding up to 1000 times its weight in water.  So if you add one extra serum to your home care regime, HA should defiantly be the one.

The sun as beautiful as it is really isn’t great for the skin.  Since a lifetime of sun exposure can lead to wrinkles & age spots.  We do have a high rate of skin cancer in Australia.   We really do need to protect our skin, year round & that includes cloudy days.  There’s no excuse to skip applying a good quality UVA & UVB sunblock.  A minimum of SPF 30 is great but SPF 50 is even better.  Get applying people, let’s slip, slop, slap every day.

You are What You Eat

Don’t get me started on inner beauty, that’s a subject for another day

Eating fresh fruits, greens, sufficient protein, and vitamins plus a diet rich in vitamin C and low in fats and sugar promotes radiant skin.

Consider a low sugar diet, which can keep insulin levels down, allowing cells to maintain a healthy balance.

Healthy Habits

Take time out for yourself, stress levels rising can lead to a breakout, we’ve all noticed a pimple appear when we are under the pump at work or our everyday lives are a bit hectic.

Stress causes our bodies to produce cortisol amongst other hormones which in turn make the skin oilier than usual.   Practicing mindfulness like breathing techniques, yoga, meditation or just getting outside in fresh air, can be a real benefit to mind, body & soul as well as your skin.

Don’t forget to smile each & every day.  The bonus of smiling is how it makes you feel on the inside & look on the out but your skin muscles will thank you for it too.  Keep those muscles toned & active, you’ll notice the difference when you express your inner joy & happiness.

I love my sleep, but I know it can be difficult for many to get those well-needed 8hrs a night. Remember your skin gets tired too so while we sleep our skin rests too.

Make sure you Remove all makeup using your cleanser & warm water not hot as this will dry the skin. Do your skincare regime before your head hits the pillow & your skin will wake as fresh as a daisy.

Simple steps towards better gut health…

“All disease begins in the gut”.  Hippocrates

More than 2000 years ago, Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine” made this statement. His words of wisdom are especially relevant today.  Modern research continues to affirm gut health is critical to general health. In fact, the gut is being referred to as our ‘second brain’.

I expect you have all heard this saying many times, but do you really know just how an unhappy gut can affect your health?

Below are nine easy steps that will help your gut get on the road to being healthy & happy.  Having a happy, better functioning gut will also help you to feel more energized, more focused & give you brighter skin & healthier nails.

A few simple steps towards better gut health

  1. Take Pre & Probiotics every day

Pre & Probiotics are a real interest to me & I believe there is still so much to learn, we are only just skimming the surface.

Probiotics help to restore the balance of ‘good bacteria’ in the intestines and maintain a healthy gut. They can help combat bloating, gas and discomfort caused by an overgrowth of yeasts or ‘bad’ bacteria. They also produce specific fatty acids that feed the cells lining the gut keeping them healthy and boost our immune function.

Prebiotics should increase the number and/or activity of lactic acid bacteria.  In short, they can improve digestion, including enhancing mineral absorption.

  1. Stay hydrated

This is a no-brainer, no surprises here, but staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your digestion and your overall health.  Having insufficient water throughout the day will slow down your digestion.

  1. Get off the couch & get moving

This one is simple & will not only help our gut.   Just 20-30 mins a day of any form of exercise will assist the gut to keep moving.

  1. Limit processed foods and eat more fibre

Processed and fried foods slow down the digestive process and should be kept to a minimum.  A low fibre, high-sugar, processed diet encourages the wrong type of bacteria and yeast to grow in our gut and damages the delicate ecosystem in your intestines.

  1. Chew your food slower

Digestion starts in the mouth and the chewing process starts to break down your food, mixing it with the enzymes in your saliva.

Stay Hydrated

  1. Limit alcohol

Alcohol can irritate the digestive system & drinking too much promotes inflammation in your body.

  1. Manage stress

This can be a difficult one for many of us, but where possible try to manage your stress levels.   Prolonged stress can really wreak havoc on your body, and impact on your digestive system. The ‘fight or flight’ response results in decreased blood flow to your digestive muscles and reduced secretion of digestive enzymes. Stress can also result in gastrointestinal inflammation, constipation or diarrhea.

  1. Regular sleep

Sleep, I love it, can’t get enough of it.  Most of us need 7-8 hours a night. While you might think you can function perfectly well on less, research suggests otherwise.  If you are sleeping badly you are more likely to pick up processed foods & sugary snacks throughout the day to keep you going.  This then is a knock on effect to an unhappy gut process.

  1. Cleanse

Cleansing the gut will help with bacterial, fungal overloads and parasites whilst promoting improved digestion.

Our gut is a very complex part of the body and the information I’ve given here will hopefully set you on the path to a healthier, happier, more gut friendly lifestyle.

I hope you enjoyed the read.

It’s time to “Embrace You”

Embrace (2)

Throughout 2018 I really want to continue the “Taking care of YOU” campaign, which was started during the lead up to Christmas.  There were treatments designed just for you & put together at Etain, to remind you all that you count too during the busy lead up to Christmas.

This campaign originally came about as 2017 was a tough year for many of us, me included.  This lead me to have to take a step back & seriously look at what was happening in my life.  On doing this I realised I couldn’t keep telling myself all was ok & just keep going the way I always do.

On taking the step back & surrounding myself with self-care & chatting to many other people of all ages, I realised I’m not the only one that gets to this point.

Therefore, in 2017, the “Taking care of YOU” campaign was born.

I now want to continue the campaign as it really sparked something in me, it has put my creative side on notice & got me coming up with many ideas that could not only be implemented at my salon in Perth but also in my home town of Mandurah & the surrounds.

I’m now more determined than ever to assist you all as much as I can to have a fun loving, easy going, less stressful, more mindful & healthy 2018.

As we are moving into a New Year the campaign needed a new name as it has grown & evolved into much more.

So for 2018 I give you “Embrace You”

My personal struggle

For me & many others owning a small business is one of the hardest things right now.  What you will find though is everyone that does own a small business is totally dedicated to making it work & even more dedicated to their staff & that means we all keep pushing through even in the hardest of times, without a thought for our own health or wellbeing.

This is me right now, I’ve struggled this year, really struggled.  I’m not saying I haven’t struggled in previous years just that this year has been by far the hardest.

The hardest on my relationships, my mental health, my general health & just my love for life & I hate that I’ve allowed this to happen.  That’s right, I’ve allowed this to happen.  Why would I say that, well, I say it as its totally how I see it for now & seeing what has happened in that way allows me to refocus & say, NO more am I going to let this go on.

I’m annoyed that I’ve let this year pass me by, I’m annoyed that I’ve been so consumed with guilt, frustration & perfectionism that I allowed those emotions to overtake my life with such force that I became swallowed up & broken.  This in turn left me unable to be a good friend, good boss, a good daughter, sister, wife & I truly, truly hate that I allowed this to happen.

I’m not saying that I’m completely free of these emotions & I know there will be days when I still shut myself away from the world but at least now I’ve admitted to myself that its happened & it may well happen in the future & that’s OK…

I’m now allowing myself to stop, take note, breathe & live slower & more mindful of ME.

The Campaign

So where does this fit in with the “Embrace YOU” campaign?

Well I think it fits perfectly, as I get to refocus my mind on what I love & find all these amazing people, places & things that can assist us all to look after ourselves, without the guilt we feel every time we put ourselves first.

One of the most important things for me to do is to find ways to take care of you.  I will do my best to plan, create & find things that will be financially viable for you all.  I want this campaign to be available for everyone, no matter your age or financial situation.

I hate the idea that any of us have to say no to a more stress free life just because we can’t justify spending on ourselves or we just can’t afford it that week.  This has stopped me on numerous occasions & I really feel by saying no when you need it the most, goes on to do the most damage to your mindset.

Let’s bring on 2018 & celebrate who we are now & how we want to grow…..

First blog post: Inspired by my beautiful friends…

A ditty about me;

Inspired by my beautiful friends
@amandaviviers & @amberkearns, I’ve finally taken the leap of faith & put my name out there.  I’ve decided to step out of the shadow of my business (etain) & use my own name.

My salon:
Don’t get me wrong I love what I’ve built with @etainskinandhair but it’s now time for not just my business to shine but for me too.

What we have at Etain has been built with our clients in mind as we always put them first & want to serve them with the best treatments & products that they’ve requested & so deserve.

I value what I have & am truly grateful that Etain is now into its 10th year & im looking forward to the next 10.

Now the business is at this point, I feel it’s time for me.

As for me….
My passion has always been natural, whole body health & lifestyle.  My background is complementary therapy & natural products & I love it all with a passion.
@amandaviviers said to me recently, you have the experience, knowledge & passion, you need to tell people this is what you do & this is who you are….

So where am I starting….
I’ve been really lucky as I know the most amazing women that I’ve been able to call my friend and even my mentor during parts of my life.  Knowing this amazing women has now enabled me to begin the next chapter of my career.

Jane Scrivner Skincare:
Janes own natural skincare products are a beautiful, luxury range using the most amazing ingredients that have been individually sourced by her & only tried & tested on humans.
As for every range I put my name behind, I’ve tried & tested it all & am loving the results I’ve seen so far.  I’m so excited that I can now share the range with you all.
I’ve recently got back from a trip to the UK where I spent some quality time with Jane at JSS headquarters.
During this time I had the pleasure of having the JSS signature facial & it blew me away.  Not only did my skin love the products, the underlying muscular structure got the most amazingly relaxing workout, leaving my face  beautifully plump.
I’m now so proud to say I am the only Jane Scrivner Skincare representative in Australia.

This is just one string to my bow & I look forward to sharing with you my knowledge & many other products, ideas & workshops that will be coming in 2018.
